Zhuhai GP likely to be wet!

This weekend’s Porsche Carrera Cup Asia rounds at the Zhuhai International Circuit is looking to be a wet one, as weather reports show possibilities of rain on all three days.

If it rains in Zhuhai for the PCCA, it could be the first time that the Asian racing series will see rain in the first three race weekends of the season. Practice 1 during the Sepang GP saw rain come down at such a heavy rate, that the session was red flagged after just two laps for the Carrera Cup drivers. Many cars, including Yuey Tan, took a spin on the second lap as the tropical rain dropped a thick layer of water across the circuit. Rain came heavy once again, just prior to Practice 2 in Shanghai, as well as Race 1 later that day in which Tan was victorious after a strong challenge from Mok Weng Sun.

“I can’t remember the last time it rained in three consecutive weekends but we are definitely getting some solid running time with the new 991 Cup car in the rain!” said 32 year old driver Tan. “It has been a challenge for sure to drive this new car fast in the wet and I am still getting my head around it.”

While the Singaporean found Malaysia quite challenging in the wet, Shanghai was a circuit which worked well for him, managing to go faster than some of his main rivals in the championship.

“I think both the team and myself driving the car are understanding better this car in the wet. It helps that its been raining a fair bit so we get a lot of time in the car to test different things and learn more. In Shanghai especially during the race, the team gave me a weapon!” he continued.

The one make Porsche series has traditionally always made for some fantastic racing in the wet, given the lack of traction control and ABS at the drivers’ disposal. As a result, there have been some amazingly memorable wet sessions over the last few seasons in Shanghai, Zhuhai, Singapore and Ordos.
