Yuey Tan: Looking at the Championship scenarios!
Singaporean race driver, Yuey Tan knows that the 2014 holds the best chance so far to scoop up the class B Porsche Carrera Cup Asia title. Though it is certain that it won’t be easy!
Tan currently sits 3rd on the table, two points behind Francis Tjia, and five points away from category leader Alif Hamdan. 20 points get awarded for a win, 18 for 2nd and 16 for 3rd. 1 point is also awarded for pole position.
For Tan to leapfrog Tjia and finish 2nd, this would require him to beat Tjia in both round 11 and 12 during the season finale this coming weekend. Though winning the championship for Tan would be a much harder feat, having to win both races against Hamdan and Tjia, with Hamdan having to finish 2nd in one race, and 3rd for the other. Assuming that Hamdan takes pole, this would mean that Tan would have to finish two places ahead of Hamdan in both races, something that has not happened during the 2014 season.
“It’s not going to be easy, that is for sure. Historically, Alif has it in him to drive carefully and finish on the podium quite easily. So realistically, I see our only chance if something goes wrong for Alif during one of the races. Other than that, its Alif’s championship to lose.” Across the 2014 races, Hamdan has taken eight wins and has finished on the podium in every single race that he has finished this season. Tan on the other hand missed out on a podium finish in Sepang at the beginning of the year, as well as once more in Zhuhai, though has taken the other two wins this season. No one else has won a race in class B this season besides Hamdan and Tan. Hamdan has also taken a DNF where as Tan has not suffered from any reliability issues all season.
As for Francis Tjia, one of Asia’s most experienced race drivers, he has finished on the podium eight times this season, including finishing 2nd on eight occassions in one of his best seasons to date. The form book is pointed toward Tan as over the last four races, Tan has managed to edge his way past Tjia on three occasions.
“I think I wouldn’t be insulting Francis or myself when I say that at the start of the season, no one really thought he or I would be in with a shout for the championship in 2014. Alif has been in lightning form since we rolled out onto track at the start of the season and I feel quite happy to be in the position that we are in.”
“Anything can happen in grand prix races, and it usually does! So I just need to be at my best and see what happens to the cars around me!”
