Carrera Cup Asia offer Spa-Francorchamps opportunity
Every season, the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia have always given a few performance incentives awarding drivers for milestones in Asia’s highest level motorsport series. In 2013, Porsche offered the top 3 drivers from each category the opportunity to attend Porsche Snow Force, the German manufacturers snow circuit located in Inner Mongolia to have the chance to show how good the road cars really were in harsh conditions. During the 2013 season, the Carrera Cu Asia also began the tradition of flying the same top 3 to the Porsche Night of Champions, a night where the highest honours for Porsche racing are recognised including the LMP1 project and all other forms of Porsche Motorsport. In 2015, something new has emerged for the drivers. At the end of rounds 5 & 6 of the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia, the championship leader for the class A & B categories will be sent to Spa-Francorchamps to compete in the Carrera Cup support race, just prior to the Le Mans round of the 24 hours of Spa.
After the first four rounds of the 2015 season, Jebsen driver Yuey Tan currently sits one point off the top of the class B table, with a realistic chance of driving a Porsche GT3 Cup Car around the world acclaimed Belgian circuit at the end of July. “Since the 90’s I’ve played Spa-Francorchamps on many different computer games for quite a few laps as I’m sure many other Singaporeans have as well! To drive it later on in the season would be a dream come true. Before that though, we need to stay fully focused on Fuji in two weeks from now and get a result to get the passage to Belgium so lets see whats what in just under a fortnight!” Spa-Francorchamps is one of the most historic circuits in the world, with the first version of the circuit being designed in 1920. It also possesses one of the worlds most famous corners, Eau Rouge which required a driver to turn in to the corner at high speed going down hill, only to hit the apex and go up hill at a very steep incline, while going over a blind horizon onto the next part of the circuit. The first four rounds of the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia has been something of a lottery, with almost every driver in the category suffering from a mishap of some sort in a race at the beginning of the season. “It’s not going to be easy!” continued Tan. “There are some great drivers in our category this season so its very competitive. Also a lot of random stuff has gone down so early in the season so who knows in motor racing. Im sure we will just all be trying to get points on the board in Fuji but its going to be tough. I expect to see Ringo Chong back in the car and in the mix of it so that will be interesting too!”
As Tan approaches the Fuji round, he currently sits one point behind class B leader Wayne Shen, with Francis Tjia a further thirteen points adrift, and Vutthikorn a further seventeen points away from Tjia.
