Tan scores podium to extend championship lead
Singaporean Yuey Tan scored 3rd in round 10, also managing to extend his lead in the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia class B standings after an extremely competitive visit to Sepang. Rounds 9 & 10 were held at the Sepang International Circuit over the weekend, with Singaporean Yuey Tan hanging onto a slender lead in the class B standings over Francis Tjia by a mere three points with Wayne Shen a further eleven points adrift, so consolidating the lead was of paramount importance. “The race weekend was very positive from the get go as we had a good first practice, finishing 2nd quickest which was pretty good considering the level that we are racing at. Qualifying was also absolutely fantastic with the likes Vuitthikorn and Perfetti in the mix, two guys that are often in a class of their own and hard to beat! Qualifying 3rd behind those two boys was not a bad result but obviously it could have been better.” “What is positive is the fact that class B qualified a mere 1.3 seconds off the class A pole position time says something about how much of a hurry everyone is in these days!” Race 1 saw Tan finish 4th in category after close rival, Francis Tjia did not finish after a touch from Skyangel as the Yonda car steering broke midway through a corner, sending Tjia into a massive 240km/h spin. Race 2 saw Tan and Shen have an exciting battle for 3rd place, battling hard throughout just about every corner that was raced between them. Tan made attempts to get past Modena Motorsports Wayne Shen on various occasions as they entered turn one, four, nine and fifteen on the Malaysian Formula One circuit, though Shen remained strong until the very end.
“It was a very exciting battle with Wayne. He was hard but fair and I just managed to get past him on the second to last lap into turn one. It was pretty damn close! At this stage in the season, we really don’t want to take chances but the move was on and we managed to get through!” After rounds 9 & 10, Singaporean driver Yuey Tan has managed to maintain his lead over arch rival Wayne Shen by seventeen points, with Vuitthikorn a further eight points adrift of 2nd place Shen. Francis Tjia has dropped back into fourth place, just behind the Thai master by a tiny margin of two points. With four races to go and eighty points on offer, the season is still very much alive as the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia heads to the Marina Bay Circuit in Singapore in a fortnight.
